A major milestone was reached this week on the NCDOT Incinerator Road project in Canton, North Carolina.

Crews led by Shaun Ryder, Brian Sellers, and Josh Mason successfully set the second phase of culverts for what will become North Carolina's first pre-cast culvert tunnel beneath I-40. The operation began at 6:30 a.m. and continued until 7:30 p.m., requiring extensive planning, coordination, and teamwork.

This innovative design utilizes massive pre-cast stem walls and arched culvert sections to create a tunnel beneath the interstate while maintaining traffic above. The structure will replace an aging bridge and provide the necessary right-of-way for future I-40 widening efforts.
