When you're building a road, sometimes the only way forward is through solid rock. On our NCDOT US 221 Bypass project, crews use hoe rams—like the one pictured here—to break through tough terrain as they carve out new roadway. Also known as hydraulic breakers or impact hammers, these heavy-duty attachments turn excavators and backhoes into powerful demolition tools. Hoe rams offer a safer alternative to traditional blasting, reducing the risks of explosives and allowing for precise, controlled rock removal.
