Project Engineer Jackson Gilliland stands at our I-40 stabilization job site in Haywood County, NC, and crews are shown diligently working to repair the damage caused by Hurricane Helene and the recent road collapse near the Pigeon River Gorge. The eastbound lane of I-40 saw an additional, significant chunk of asphalt fall away in late December, with wet and freezing weather contributing to the slide.

Originally slated to reopen in early January, this section will remain closed as we take every precaution to ensure its safety. Crews are installing additional soil nails to further stabilize the highway, even as winter weather presents its challenges.

Safety remains our top priority, and we're committed to reopening the road only when it's ready to support all travelers securely. Stay tuned for updates as we continue our efforts.
