Republic Services Landfill Cell Development Project - Lee & Richardson Counties, SC

Wright Brothers Contracting crews are constructing this active landfill expansion project in Sumter, South Carolina, where more than 100,000 cubic yards of material have been excavated to prepare the site for a new waste containment cell. As part of the cell construction process, crews installed approximately 25,000 cubic yards of compacted clay liner material in a 24-inch-thick layer, creating a critical low-permeability barrier designed to protect surrounding soil and groundwater.

The project has now advanced into the installation phase of a 60-mil HDPE liner system, a key environmental protection component engineered to provide long-term containment and durability within the landfill cell. These liner systems play a vital role in modern landfill construction by helping control seepage and supporting regulatory compliance.

Following completion of the liner installation, crews will begin installing approximately 2,000 linear feet of 8-inch HDPE piping to support the site’s leachate collection and drainage systems. The final phase of work will include placement of approximately 21,000 cubic yards of protective cover soil above the liner system to complete the cell structure.

The work is being led by Superintendent Kevin Nye and Foreman Ian Roberts, whose field leadership and coordination efforts continue to keep the project moving safely and efficiently. Projects of this scale require detailed planning, environmental precision, and experienced heavy civil construction teams capable of executing complex earthwork, liner installation, and utility operations under demanding conditions.
